Card design
Design for manufacturing [DfM] for laser cutting
Sustainable material use
Ease of assembly
Using discarded paint samples as a colorful medium, ChairCard is my laser-cut business card that folds into a mini chair. It uses 100% of the paper sample and all the lines and word etchings are done on the laser cutter.
Business cards are, by nature, ephemeral.
They are given out as a single-use introduction with the intent of communicating information, then wastefully discarded forever. I wondered how my business card could communicate my skills and value as a designer, but also last longer and bring joy to the user.
Design Requirement
Use 100% of the material. ♻️
I challenged myself to use the entire 2.5" x 5.5" surface of the paper paint sample in my business card. There are no cut-out sections at all, only laser-cut lines and etchings.
Design Requirement
Simple design.
Simple manufacturing. 🪑
The card is designed to be as simple as possible, using only a minimal number of cuts to turn a 2D card into a 3D chair. This in turn also simplifies and speeds up the manufacturing process.
Mechanism
Fold twice.
And secure it with a smile. 😊
The card is designed to be easy to put together for everyone. Each cut line is intentionally designed to create an experience that is fun and satisfying. The final locking mechanism that puts the chair together is a half circle tab, commonly used in packaging design. In this case, it's also a smile :)
